This month’s art show features works by Laura Blue Palmer, who was our Juried Art Expo Juror’s Choice Winner of 2023. As a recipient of this award, Laura has the opportunity to have her own solo art show.
This body of abstract artwork is reflective of landscape, plants, and animals. Laura uses linear brush movements to break up the space on her canvas. She wishes to create balance through color movement and painting layers with color and light. Laura aims to have every part of the painting to look interesting. These paintings celebrate her love for abstraction, plants, night skies, and small birds and creatures.
Laura Palmer was born and raised in Southwestern Virginia and moved to Montana in 1994. She studied fine art at the University of Montana for 2 years and then completed her formal education at the San Francisco Art Institute, earning a BFA in 1999. Having an affection towards Montana, she moved back in 2000.
Laura has created a body of abstract and linear color compositions, giving fluid natural scenes with the use of bold color brushwork against high contrast backgrounds. In creating this body of work, she found herself thinking about how the natural world connects us through the use of vibrant and movable color and line. Laura is interested in the shapes you find on land, the geology of rock, and the colors you find in flowers and plants. Sometimes she incorporates realism by adding birds and small creatures. She likes to listen to her head and her heart, meditating through naturally occurring scenes. The process is organic and exciting, a journey that she continues to explore.
