The 59,000-acre Bitter Creek Wilderness Study Area (WSA) is located in north Valley County in the glaciated plains of northeast Montana. This is a popular area for hunting and backpacking as well as photography and wildlife and scenic viewing. The WSA is a Watchable Wildlife area as well as a featured stop on Montana's Northeastern Plains Birding Trail. Highlighted species include Sprague's pipit, McCown's longspur, Baird's sparrow, and long-billed curlew.
