The Dion Builiding

Located in the heart of historic downtown Glendive, the Dion Block has been a center of commerce and community life for more than a century. Construction of the complex began in 1886, and its collection of connected historic storefronts remains one of the most recognizable architectural landmarks in Glendive’s downtown historic district.

In recent years, the Dion Block has undergone an extensive historic rehabilitation designed to preserve its distinctive character while preparing the buildings for another generation of use. The project has included major roof restoration, rehabilitation of historic skylights, façade and storefront improvements, restoration of pressed-metal ceilings and other historic architectural details, along with updated heating, cooling, electrical and building systems. Wherever possible, original features and salvaged historic materials have been preserved or reintroduced.

The restoration has earned statewide recognition. In 2025, the Dion Block received the Montana Historic Preservation Governor’s Award for Outstanding Preservation Rehabilitation, recognizing the project as an exceptional example of preserving Montana’s architectural heritage while returning historic spaces to productive use.

Today, the Dion Block is much more than a preserved landmark—it remains an active part of downtown Glendive. Its restored storefronts and upper-level spaces are home to a mix of locally owned businesses, professional offices and personal-service businesses, including McPherson Dental, Black Sheep Market, Massage by Rachel and others. Visitors can experience the building much as generations of Glendive residents have: not as a museum, but as a working commercial block filled with local businesses and activity.

The Dion Block demonstrates how historic preservation and economic revitalization can work together. For visitors exploring downtown Glendive, nearby Makoshika State Park and the Yellowstone River country of eastern Montana, it offers a tangible connection between the community’s railroad-era beginnings and its evolving downtown today.
