So It’s Your First Rodeo? Here’s What to Expect.

Rodeos are a quintessential aspect of Montana’s Western culture, and recently it was officially adopted as our state sport.

Action-packed rodeo events grew from skills that cattle herders and ranchers traditionally used in their work — making rodeo both a thrilling spectacle and a celebration of heritage. This summertime staple is something that Montanans look forward to each season. If this is your first rodeo, here’s everything you need to know.

How do you get tickets?

For tickets, we’re kicking it old school. Many of these rodeos — especially the smaller ones — only sell tickets at the gate prior to the event, so make sure you’re in line early to secure a spot. For bigger rodeos, tickets are usually sold online.

What are the events?

Most rodeos you attend will feature some variation of these few events. Here’s the breakdown so you’re in the know:

● Barrel racing - A timed event where a horse and rider maneuver through strategically placed barrels as fast as they can.

● Bull riding - Referred to as “the most dangerous 8 seconds in sports,” a rider attempts to stay mounted on a bucking bull for as long as possible.

● Roping - There are several different types of roping — mainly team, steer and tie-down — but at its core, it’s a roper, a lasso and an animal that’s trying not to get caught.

● Steer wrestling - In this event, a cowboy chases a steer on his horse, dismounts and wrestles the steer to the ground.

● Saddle bronc and bareback riding - Similar to bull riding, but with horses! One event has riders holding on to a saddle, the other only allowing them to grip a leather rigging.

● Wild Horse Race - While this event doesn’t typically utilize true wild horses anymore, it’s still the same idea. Teams of three cowboys attempt to saddle and ride a horse, and the first cowboy to successfully ride around the arena wins.
