The Great Golden Eagle Migration: Where to Go and What to Know

Each fall, hundreds of golden eagles soar across the Bridger Mountains on their annual migration south, creating one of the largest known eagle migration corridors in the country. To celebrate and highlight the event, the Bridger Raptor Festival will take place Oct. 4–5, offering the public a unique opportunity to witness the spectacle while learning about raptors and their conservation.

The festival features live raptor demonstrations, family-friendly educational programs, and expert talks from wildlife biologists who study the migration. Free and open to all ages, the event is designed to inspire appreciation for birds of prey and the landscapes they depend on. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or a curious newcomer, the Bridger Raptor Festival provides a chance to connect with nature and experience the majesty of the golden eagle migration firsthand.

In case you are not able to make the Bridger Raptor Festival, here are some other fantastic bird-watching opportunities to add to your autumn road trip:

  • Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, where wide-open landscapes are home to fascinating upland game birds like the greater sage grouse and sharp-tailed grouse.
  • Ennis Lake is a stunning stopover for migrating birds, from elegant swans to the graceful common loon and a variety of grebes. Visitors can enjoy unforgettable wildlife viewing amid breathtaking natural scenery.
