Get Your Spooky On: Ghost Towns and Gold Mines

Transport back to Montana’s mining days by planning a trip to one of the well-preserved ghost towns, many of which are found in Southwest Montana.

These towns were once thriving boom towns for gold and silver mining. Today they allow visitors to experience the feel of the Old West. See them first-hand at these upcoming events:

  • June 6: For over 100 years, the Old Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge served as the main prison for the state. On June 6, the prison will offer visitors the chance to experience paranormal activity during the Prison Ghost Tour, which starts at 8 p.m. and goes until 2 a.m.
  • July 19-20: Travel back in time to Montana’s first territorial capital during Bannack Days, where visitors can experience the “Old West” with live reenactments, demonstrations and guided tours of this once booming gold-mining town.
  • July 4th in Virginia City: What was once the site of the richest placer gold strike in the Rocky Mountains, Virginia City is another well-preserved former mining town that comes alive in the summer months. Plan a trip around July 4th for fireworks, music and more local entertainment.
