"Good Intentions and Unintended Consequences: Why Shoshones & Bannocks Aren’t on the Map of Montana" - Sally Thompson - Speaker Series — Carbon County Historical Society & Museum

Join author and anthropologist Sally Thompson on Thursday, September 10, 2026, for a thought-provoking presentation at the Carbon County Historical Society & Museum in Red Lodge. Thompson will explore the history of the Lemhi Shoshone and Bannock peoples and how historical circumstances have shaped their representation on maps of Montana. Drawing on decades of research and collaboration with Indigenous communities, she will discuss efforts to recognize and reconnect these communities with their Montana homeland. Thompson is an award-winning nonfiction author whose work is informed by interviews with more than 250 Indigenous elders from tribes along the Missouri and Columbia Rivers. The speaker series event runs from 5–6 p.m. and offers an opportunity to learn more about Montana’s Indigenous history and the stories that have shaped the region.
