150th Anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn

From June 25–27, 2026, the National Park Service and partnering tribal nations, historians, descendants, and community organizations will commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. The three-day event will focus on remembrance, education, reflection, and cultural exchange through ceremonies, presentations, demonstrations, and community programs, with free admission each day. Opening day on June 25 will feature a Parade of Nations and Tribal Flags, military and tribal color guards, a flyover by the Montana Air National Guard, and remarks from tribal leaders, historians, and cultural speakers including Chief Arvol Looking Horse. Programs throughout the anniversary will include tribal and cavalry descendant presentations, traditional drum groups, cultural demonstrations, park ranger programs, youth activities, and educational exhibits from organizations such as the Museum of the Rockies and the InterTribal Buffalo Council. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead by using the free shuttle system from off-site parking near I-90 Exit 510, as heavy traffic is expected throughout the event. Attendees should bring food, water bottles, and weather-appropriate clothing since all activities are outdoors and no food vendors will be available on-site. The anniversary also connects to America’s 250th birthday in 2026, reflecting on the Battle of the Little Bighorn’s lasting impact on U.S. and Native American history. Organizers noted that reenactments of the battle will occur on private property and not within the national monument itself.
