Darrell Kipp – Apiniokio Peta (Morning Eagle)
Native American author, historian and educator
“Everything in Montana that you see, every waterfall, every river, every pass, everywhere you go has been described uniquely in Indian languages for thousands and thousands of years. ”
— Darrell Kipp
Harvard scholar, U.S. veteran and member of the Blackfeet tribe, Darrell Kipp has traveled far and wide in his work to revitalize Native American languages. Through documentary films and cultural projects, he helped catalyze an extraordinary healing process–the giving back of the Blackfeet language and its inherent naturalistic wisdom to Montana’s Blackfeet community. Kipp cofounded the Piegan Institute, a national Native Language preservation organization headquartered in Browning, Montana. He also directs the Cuts Wood School, a Blackfeet language immersion program for grades K through 8. Cuts Wood doesn’t just teach a near-extinct language, the school teaches an understanding of the world that the Blackfeet people developed over generations of intimate connections with one of Montana’s precious mountain biospheres.
Explore Darrell’s favorite places
Darrell’s favorite places across Montana are the places where his tribe has always taken their friends: places where the air is of the freshest air, the night skies are the starriest skies, the finest fresh foods are grown and the people come together to enjoy good company and to meditate. Many of the well-established areas that his ancestors have favored for thousands of years still exist in places like Glacier National Park. At the galleries, museums and businesses in and around Browning, Blackfeet culture is still very much alive.
