Avon, thirty-two miles from Helena, is a supply point where cattle and sheep ranchers rub elbows with prospectors and miners. It was named by a local Welshman. Avon means “river” in Welsh, and the rivers in this valley reminded him of his homeland. (from Cheney’s Names on the Face of Montana, Mountain Press Publishing Company)
